Check whether you have to register
Iowa requires registration if you earn $2,000 or more a year from construction work in the state. It applies to sole traders and businesses alike, and it applies to out-of-state contractors working in Iowa. Working only on property you own yourself is exempt.

Get an Iowa unemployment insurance number
Both in-state and out-of-state contractors need one before the registration can be issued. This is the reason registration exists at all. It is a labor-law compliance mechanism, not a trade credential.

If your principal place of business is outside Iowa, file a $25,000 bond
Out-of-state contractors must file a $25,000 bond in order to register. This is the single most common reason an out-of-state application stalls.

Renew every year, and keep your number
Registration must be renewed annually. The State sends a renewal notice the month before yours expires, and renewing on time keeps your existing registration number. Let it lapse and you are unregistered until it is reinstated.

We do not score, vet, screen or recommend contractors, and no amount of money changes what we say about the quality of your work, which is nothing, because we have no way to know. Being registered with the State does not make you good at your job either, and we will not tell homeowners it does. That is a worse sales pitch and a better business: the reason homeowners trust this directory enough to call anyone is that it is not for sale.
