Get the exact legal business name, or the registration number
Trading names and legal names often differ — "Smith Roofing" may be registered as "Smith Enterprises LLC". Ask for the name the registration is held in. Searching the wrong name is the most common reason a legitimate contractor appears to be missing.

Check the status and the expiry date
A record existing is not the same as a registration being current. Confirm the status reads "Registered" and that the expiry date is in the future. Registrations lapse, and a lapsed one is not a current credential.

These are the trades Iowa genuinely licenses through a board with an exam. The licence is a far stronger signal than the registration, and it is verified separately from it.

Ask for proof of insurance — registration does not cover it
Request a current certificate of general liability and workers’ compensation insurance, and confirm it with the insurance agent named on the certificate. This is the step that actually protects your property.
