This directory is a complete, public copy of one government record. Here is exactly where the data comes from, what it does and does not tell you, and how to download and verify every line of it yourself.
As of August 2026, the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing listed 18,897 construction contractors with a current State registration, across 99 Iowa counties and 31 trades. 99.6% have a public phone number on file. This site lists every one of them.
The primary source
Every record here comes directly from the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL), which maintains Iowa’s official register of construction contractors under Iowa Code ch. 91C. The State publishes this as the “Active Iowa Construction Contractor Registrations” record and serves it through a free public API — the same source anyone can query. We re-ingest it and republish it, unchanged, in a form that is easy to search, read, and download.

What is — and is not — included
- Included: businesses the State shows as holding a current registration (Active Iowa Construction Contractor Registrations). Registration number, status, issue and expiry dates, trade (NAICS-derived), city, county, ZIP, and the public phone number on file.
- Excluded — pending applications. Businesses that applied but are not yet registered (New, Under Review, or Request-for-Information) are not listed. Thousands have no registration number at all; listing them under a “registered” heading would be an overclaim.
- Excluded — private details. We never publish email addresses or street addresses (most contractors are home-based). Only the public phone number is shown.
What registration does NOT mean (the honest limits)
Registration is not a license. It is not an endorsement, a rating, a background check, or a guarantee of quality, insurance, or bonding. It confirms one thing: the business filed a current registration with the State of Iowa.
- We do not rank, rate, review, vet, or recommend any contractor. There are no reviews and no star ratings on this site by design — we have none, and inventing them is the exact dishonesty this directory exists to avoid.
- Ordering within a list is alphabetical, except that a contractor who pays for a Premiere placement appears first and is labelled as paid placement — never as “better.”
- Before hiring, always confirm the registration is active, ask for current proof of liability insurance and workers’ compensation, and get at least three written bids.
How current it is
The snapshot on this page was exported from the State’s record on August 3, 2026. We re-ingest the full State register periodically and rebuild the site from the new snapshot; the “as of” date above always reflects the data you are seeing. Note that the State resets a registration’s issue date when it is renewed, so issue dates measure activity, never business “growth.”

Per-county and per-trade CSV extracts are linked from each county and trade page (e.g. the “Download this list” link under the FAQ). Downloads carry the public State fields only — never claimed, enriched, or private data.

Is a registered contractor the same as a licensed contractor?
No. Registration under Iowa Code ch. 91C confirms a contractor filed a current registration with the State; it is not a license, an endorsement, or a guarantee of quality, insurance, or bonding. Some trades — electricians, plumbers, HVAC — are separately licensed by Iowa boards that do test competence.
