A useful kitchen budget starts with a written scope and quotes for your own home. Keeping the layout, replacing cabinets and moving plumbing are different jobs. This guide helps you explain the work and compare what each remodeler includes. IBC does not have a verified current Iowa price survey, so it does not publish a statewide price range here.
Choose the scope before comparing prices
- Refresh: describe the surfaces, hardware, fixtures and appliances you want to replace or keep.
- Replace: list the cabinets, counters, flooring and appliances to be removed and installed.
- Reconfigure: mark proposed wall, sink, appliance and electrical changes for the contractor to assess.
Ask bidders to separate labor, materials, allowances, removal and any work by other trades. A quote with appliances excluded cannot be compared directly with one that includes them.
What to send contractors
Use the same short brief for each bidder:
- Room measurements and the location of windows, doors, sink and appliances.
- Photos if available; they are helpful, not required to request quotes.
- What must stay, what should change, and your preferred finishes.
- Your preferred timing and a budget range you are comfortable sharing.
- Whether the kitchen must remain usable while work happens.
You can request remodeling quotes with a job, place and email. Add detail later in your dashboard. Confirm the emailed link before the project opens to contractors; responses depend on their availability.
Compare the same work
Ask each bidder how the proposal handles cabinet and countertop allowances, delivery dates, installation, disposal and unknown conditions found during demolition. Agree how changes are priced and approved in writing. Ask about the sequence of work and a temporary cooking arrangement rather than assuming a standard completion time.
Confirm permit and inspection requirements with the local authority for the project address. Agree who coordinates them and any separate trades. Iowa DIAL directs homeowners to local government for project requirements. Registration alone does not establish kitchen experience, availability or a trade license.

How much should I budget?
Use itemized local quotes for the scope you have actually described. Ask what is fixed, what is an allowance, and what discoveries could change the price. Decide with your contractor how to provide for those uncertainties; no single contingency percentage fits every home.
How long will the work take?
Ask for a proposed sequence and dates tied to material availability, trade coordination and inspections. Keep delivery assumptions and changes in writing.
Can I start without photos?
Yes. IBC's request form does not require photos. Contractors may need a visit or more detail before giving a dependable price.
