  I hired Furst Construction in Salt Lake City to build a self-storage facility, and my experience was extremely disappointing. The schedule was never followed, maintained, or properly communicated throughout the project. Subcontractors were not held accountable for poor workmanship, especially on critical tasks like soil compaction and grouting for the storm water system. When I raised these issues as the owner, the general contractor and project manager said it wasn't their responsibility to direct the subs, which seems like a major red flag.The design-build flaws were apparent from inception. The asphalt was installed with less than 0.5% slope, which is well below industry standards and created drainage problems that should have been caught during the design phase. At project completion, we discovered large sinkholes (up to 8 feet wide and 2 feet deep) due to erosion caused by absent grouting. The job took eight months longer than expected and cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest and lost revenue from missing our prime lease-up season.Communication was also terrible, they often blocked roads for work without informing me, making it impossible to notify my tenants, and we lost customers due to blocked access, debris, and construction chaos. Even after a settlement agreement, with one final task left (a double check valve install at a set price and no change orders), Furst Construction is now demanding an extra $20,000 and threatening to put a lien on my property, despite no signed change order or proper documentation.Based on my experience with Furst Construction, I cannot recommend them. Poor design oversight, substandard quality control, lack of accountability, and unjust billing practices make them a risky choice for any project.
