Hailing from the small community of Blakely, Minnesota, Mark began his environmental and wildfire journey in Ely, Minnesota, working with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to support national wildfire suppression efforts. He went on to serve with the U.S. Forest Service in multiple roles, including engine crew member, helicopter crew member, and fuels technician. Mark transitioned to the private sector in 2019, managing prescribed fire and wildfire suppression operations. During this time, he oversaw 760 prescribed burns totaling more than 36,000 acres, while also serving in multiple leadership roles within the Minnesota Prescribed Fire Council. Mark joined the NRP team in March 2024, where he continues to champion safe prescribed fire, operational excellence, and the advancement of professional fire management practices. His career remains rooted in the same values that shaped his early years, stewardship, safety, and a commitment to restoring and protecting the landscapes we depend on.
